Public buy-back of poor private rentals
In order to rebalance our housing market and secure safe, affordable homes for all we need the number of social homes to increase.
How do we do this? As well as building new homes from scratch we should turn our attention to the vast quantity of private rental properties that already exist. These are properties that have the potential to become secure, social homes that provide people with a decent foundation to build their lives.
We want the government to make it easier for social landlords (like local councils and housing associations) and community-led housing groups to buy back poor-quality private rentals and turn them into good-quality, affordable social homes.
