Right now, housing costs are out of control, with a huge impact on people’s health and ability to raise a family. This government tells us that the solution to the housing affordability crisis is to build, build, build. We’ve got a better solution — cap rents today, and build accessible council homes tomorrow.

On 24 June, seven mayors will be in Manchester at the Housing Leadership Symposium, discussing devolution and housing. Mayors are getting new powers on housing in 2025 — but these don’t currently include any powers to control rents so we need to fight hard to make that happen.

We want the mayors to ask the government to give them the power to cap rents in their regions — and we’ll be outside the conference calling on them to take action.

Housing developers will be at the conference too, trying to influence politicians to keep supporting them. But these same developers profit from the crisis, and are not the solution to it.

We need you to join us to make our call as loud as possible and to counter the voice of the developers inside the conference. Politicians local and national need to listen to what renters have to say and protect our interests over developers, this means rent caps today and building accessible council homes tomorrow.

We’ll book coaches for any big groups travelling from outside of Manchester, so please let us know in the form where you’ll be coming from. The day will involve an fairly early start with exact timings tbc.
